I think ppl subconsciously don't permit themselves to think the models are dumb because they're afraid to disagree with prestigious AI ppl. Then they read claudisms and their gut knows Fable is dumb because you can't lie to your gut. The dissonance is uncomfortable so ppl distract themselves with YouTube and don't think too hard about the whole AI sci-fi future thing.
But once you permit yourself the thought that along many dimensions Fable is very very dumb, you can permit the thought that it will not stay so dumb for very long. In 2-3 generations, or maybe in one, it will not speak in claudisms. This will not feel "trained out" like it does today in Sol. It will feel like it isn't speaking in claudisms because it's genuinely smart enough not to do that.
It’s a bit paradoxical that you have to allow yourself to think the models are dumb before you can viscerally imagine yourself talking to a real thinking machine. When I do that I experience the sensation of alienness and trepidation I haven't felt since the first time I watched the Matrix as a teenager.
But in any case it can’t be long now before people experience this sensation whether they want to or not. Tbh this is where my imagination tops out. I can’t even begin to imagine the hurricane when it sinks in for a billion people practically overnight this isn’t going to blow over and all of it is actually real.
